Brian was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He gained his love for woodcarving at 11 years old when he and his family traveled to Branson, Missouri in the late 80s. It was there that he enjoyed watching carvers peel away blocks of wood into something special. It was quite magical.

He asked an ‘ol timer one year how he could get started into carving and was told that he could take a pocket knife and use a bar of soap. He took that advice and carved a boot for his mom. He carved off and on after that but became more serious after taking a class in Des Moines in 2007.

In 2016, Brian and his family moved to the Branson area to make the Ozarks their home. He enjoys carving just about anything, but most of his focus has been on caricatures. That said, he’s dabbled with chainsaw carving and most recently is learning classical/ornamental carving.

If you want to learn how to carve, Brian can teach you how you can carve the boot below with just a good quality knife. It will be a good introduction to sharpening and honing a knife as well as using stop cuts and other basic cuts to get comfortable with your knife.
