Cardinal Carving, Wood Burning, & Painting

Each student will carve the bird from a roughout to create and shape their cardinal. From there, each carver can decide the level of detail and complexity they would like to pursue. This makes the class suitable for different skill and comfort levels.

The accompanying photos show three examples of the level of detail that can be achieved. The first

cardinal has no carved feather detail; the bird’s appearance and feather details are created entirely

through painting. The second cardinal uses knife carving and small gouges to add feather and body

detail before painting. The third cardinal represents the highest level of detail and incorporates

wood burning to create fine feather texture and additional definition. Participants will be able to

choose the approach that best fits their experience, interests, and desired level of complexity. Richards

goal is for everyone to enjoy the carving process while creating a cardinal they will be proud to take

home.
